Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton on Sarah Palin:
Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain’s commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush’s failed economic policies — that’s not the change we need, it’s just more of the same.
If only she’d made a speech back in 2002.

Some artists are rebelling against iTunes, saying that it's reverting the business back to being singles-based. Understandable, but I guess because I've been listening to _more_ albums

The Guardian's sport columnist rants about "Team GB", the new. . . er. . . brand for the British Olympic team. Why do non-profits and government agencies NEED branding, exactly? A good question, indeed.

Cutting coverage mandates (some of the 1,900 things each insurance provider legally must cover) and allowing people to cross state lines to buy insurance would cut 20-50% of the cost of health insurance.
But wait: that would mean no pitchforks and torches and hanging insurance executives! Forgo affordable AND providable healthcare in order to lynch more "corporate fat cats"? Yes, we can!

street fights and diplomacy
When I got knocked down by guys bigger than me, she sent me back out and demanded that I bloody their nose so I could walk down that street the next day.
Really, Joe? She didn’t tell you to invite the guys over to discuss a multilateral disarmament? She didn’t tell you to call your classmates together so they could give you permission to possibly shove them out of your way? She didn’t want you to bring some extra lunch, since they’re probably just hungry? She didn’t blame you for invading their sidewalk?
Man, your mom sounds like a unilateralist neocon.

the march of tech productivity continues
For those who are fans of hyperproductivity app Quicksilver, Mozilla Labs has a treat for you! Ubiquity is a browser-side command interface that lets you manipulate things you see in your browser (currently, Firefox only). By pressing CTRL+Space, you bring up a command line in which you can type, say “weather chevy chase, md” to bring up the weather in a translucent popup. Or you can highlight a bunch of listings on craigslist, press CTRL+Space, type “map these”, and instantly see a google map with the selected listings plotted.
Even my words of amazement can’t do it justice. Look at this demo video. And then marvel, because it’s a 0.1 release.
Ubiquity for Firefox from Aza Raskin on Vimeo.
The only downside to the platform is that it’s not OS-wide. I would have to switch to Firefox on my Mac and keep it open to take advantage of the features. So it doesn’t do file management or work with any other apps–something Quicksilver does so well. But still, we’re getting so much closer to the point where we can simply speak or type a command into our computers and get precisely the information we want in the form we desire.
