Some polls last week showed voters supporting the bailout by 10 points, while others showed opposition by 86 points. What's with the discrepancy? Turns out that the "Mueller Test"–telling survey respondents about the tax costs involved–plays a part. Voters dislike "bailouts" but seem to be more comfortable with "government investment." All of which means we need to educate voters about where "government investments" come from.

The costs of dismissing workers around the world. No surprise: the nations which make it hard to fire workers disincentivize hiring. . . and have poorer economies as a result.

An interesting profile on classic liberals in India. It includes a mention of the Centre for Civil Society, for whom I interned in 2004-05.

A fantastic (and well-illustrated) flow chart on the absurd process to get into the US and become a citizen. And you wonder why so many come here illegally?

My former polling prof, while making the dubious claim that Bush is the worst president ever (did you see the shit that went down in the Adams and Madison administrations?), makes the excellent point that 2008 will not Change the World or any other form of yeswecanhopechange.

Only in South India. India is plagued with record levels violence against women, and you're worried about very sexy condom wrappers violating honor and decency? At least the Supreme Court has half a brain.

My favorite might be the bit about kids paying 55 cents ($8.44 in 2007dollars) to sit in the bleachers, where the Bambino himself (by then an outfielder) would talk to kids in the stands between pitches. That no longer happens (and the seats are $25+), but at least the players aren't punching the fans out. . . like a certain backstabbing professional basketball league.

Wow. So now app developers also can't mention to others that they've been given a vague excuse for their arbitrary rejections after hundreds of hours of work. Good idea: quit being dicks, Cupertino. That one's free, Steve; call me anytime.

A contest to design the cover for a novel called "The Island at the End of the World" yields some pretty awesome results. A few simply don't work, and a few seem rather unoriginal. But all 25 have some merit.

A pretty neat tool to help you find out where your preferred username is already taken. I wish I'd had this handy about four years ago, when I was signing up for web-app sites with reckless abandon. A half-dozen usernames later, I'm struggling to remember how I registered with each site.

Despite the pleadings of hip-hop artists, who argue otherwise, it seems that recruits among whites and among the upper- and middle-class are overrepresented in today's military. You will not, of course, see any retractions from those who've been complaining that rich white men were sending poor dark-skinned kids to die for oil/power/phallic-prompted revenge/evil.

A mesmerizing post-it experiment. Maybe it's only mesmerizing when one has a couple of poorly-mixed screwdrivers in the system. Either way…

If the US backs out of the civilian nuclear deal that's been two years in the works, a top Indian nuclear scientist says they'll fall back on France and Russia. Yeah, depending on Russia for energy has worked really well for Europe that past few years.

Iggles coach Andy Reid and The Atlantic's Mark Bowden look at how much the game has changed since the Greatest Game in 1958. For one thing, Offensive Linemen are 50% bigger. Yeah, that's huge. Just look at Leonard Davis.

bill o'reilly is a douche
There, I said it. I’ve believed it for at least five years, but I’m going on the record. The Steven Colbert interview was amusing, but this interview—with Fox News’s own Neil Cavuto—was refreshing. Finally, someone who puts the populist douche-barrel in his place:

Christopher Hitchens thinks Barack Obama is the strongest candidate in dealing with an unstable Pakistan. If he's right, then get ready for the disillusionment, isolationists. (And yes, I'll be setting up a banquet featuring crow if he turns out to be a terrific foreign policy president. But I've been wrong before. Right Vladimir?)
